The Steadman Clinic along with the Steadman Philippon Research Institute houses one of the premier orthopaedic research and education programs in the world. The athletic training program is a division of this acclaimed program. During the residency athletic trainers will be exposed to cutting edge orthopaedic research, technologies and techniques. The core of the program focuses on education and professional growth. The curriculum includes lecture series, surgical skill labs, cadaver labs, research, journal clubs, rotational competencies and symposiums/conferences.


What sets us apart from other residency programs?

The Steadman Clinic houses one of the longest running post-professional educational programs with athletic trainers working in the physician practice (historically a fellowship). Our physicians and staff all hold athletic trainers in the highest professional respect. The resident has direct patient experiences with a wide variety of subspecialities in Orthopaedics. The class of 7 build an active social life outside of work and develop life-long relationships, commonly creating the highlights of the year.  We are one of the few privately owned facilities that have an in-house a surgical skills lab, robotics lab and biomotion lab, all readily available to athletic training residents. A MD fellowship program runs during the same timeline as the AT residency. The fellows work side-by-side daily with the AT residents and are great collaborators on education and research. The physician’s prestige, MD fellows and alumnus residents create a large professional network helping you find a job after the residency.

Curriculum Overview
  • Specific learning objectives with skill and knowledge competencies and role delineations for each subspecialty of Orthopaedics

  • Learning assessments including pre and post resident exam

  • Anatomy curriculum including cadaver labs for gross anatomy, surgical anatomy labs, and diagnostic imaging taught by physicians
  • Surgical curriculum includes surgical observation requirements, introduction to OR and sterile techniques, patient positioning and room setup, surgical tools and instruments, arthroscopy labs, surgical technique labs and trauma labs
  • Advanced clinical diagnostic skills, including patient interviews, physical exams, image review, laboratory and biological marker findings
  • Resident evaluations and self-reflections are completed for every rotation and at the end of year
  • Research project is required
