The Mentorship is the Most Important

Every year a team of fellows who has completed their orthopaedic residencies come to Vail to expand their surgical and research skills. Their focus is on the causes, treatment and prevention of injuries.

Most will say their time at The Steadman Clinic and SPRI was the most valuable experience of their career. Recently we asked former fellows why they chose SPRI and the impact on their success.

In his own words – Dr. Justin Mitchell, MD

In my opinion, the sports medicine fellowship is the best, and most well-rounded experience in the country.  TSC and SPRI are uniquely positioned to provide their fellows with an immersive experience in all aspects of care for the athlete, and also world class research.  The mentorship aspect of the clinic, however, is the most important.  Having done my fellowship in Vail, I have gained friends and mentors for life.  I learned sports medicine from the best surgeons in the country, and having the ability to reach out and discuss patient care with them is an invaluable resource.

After completing my fellowship in Vail, I moved back to my home state of Wisconsin to join a busy sports medicine practice.  There is not a day that goes by that a patient does not reference the fact that they chose to come see me because of my background with The Steadman Clinic.  Because of the training I received in Vail, I was able to bring cutting edge surgical techniques and biologic treatments to my new practice, which helps me treat my patients better.  I am forever grateful for the time I spent at TSC and SPRI.

In his own words – Dr. Patrick Kane, MD

I definitely did not choose Steadman for the location.  Vail and skiing may have held a lot of appeal for a lot of people looking at Steadman but I was actually very apprehensive about the winter in Colorado.  I had never really skied before and never thought I'd end up in the mountains for a year.  I really chose Steadman for the people.  From the moment I interviewed and met the physicians at SPRI I knew that was where I wanted to be.  They're some of the best surgeons in the world but were so incredibly approachable, positive, and enthusiastic about teaching and mentoring the next generation of sports surgeons.  I know my own learning style and personality and I knew working with the surgeons at Steadman would be the best possible fellowship experience for me.  After having just finished that year, I have to say it did not disappoint.  My year in Vail was everything I could have asked for and more.  It exceeded all expectations and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.  All of the attendings were incredible to work with (not just our main sports surgeons but all of them, Dr. Viola and Dr. Clanton included). The cadaver lab experience is something that I don't think any other program in the country can even come close to matching.  It was truly invaluable to my education and has already helped me tremendously in my current practice.  The entire staff at The Steadman Clinic was amazing.  My wife actually tore her ACL and became a patient and the overwhelming support from everyone at Steadman was truly remarkable.  The ski team coverage/trips are experiences that I honestly never would have even dreamed of but were so incredible and experiences that I will truly never forget.

I could not have asked for a better fellowship in preparing me for my current practice.  The mentorship experience with the Steadman physicians has been invaluable and I think the relationships built with them might be the most important aspect of the fellowship.  I still communicate with them on almost a weekly to even daily basis for questions about cases and patients.  Their guidance and reassurance has been a tremendous resource for me in establishing my own practice.  I've been able to bring a completely new skill set to the area where I'm practicing because of the incredible training I received at Steadman.  The cadaver lab was such an important resource in my education and preparing me for independent practice.

In his own words – Dr. Sandeep Mannava, MD, PhD

The Steadman Clinic and Steadman Philippon Research Institute is an unparalleled clinical and research institute that is a world class organization. The experience during fellowship was rich in both clinical volume, complexity, and progressive responsibility. Additionally, as a fellow, we were able to integrate into the world-famous research endeavors. It is rare to be in a position to learn from some of the world’s best surgeons and innovators, and the fellowship provided this experience. The fellowship is a true mentorship experience, where each of the physicians is personally invested in our growth as surgeons and scientists.

I am currently practicing orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine as a faculty member at the University of Rochester. My fellowship experience prepared me for the rigors of academic practice, in terms of understanding surgical indications, performing complex sports medicine surgery, and developing research interests.

In his own words – Dr. Jonathan Godin, MD

I chose the Steadman Clinic for fellowship because of the following:
  • The breadth of pathology seen
  • The advanced techniques performed
  • The true mentorship from the attending surgeons
  • The availability of the cadaver lab to practice surgical skills
  • The numerous research offerings
  • The overall collegial atmosphere
  • The opportunity to live in Vail for a year

The fellowship has helped me in my current position by preparing me to take the best care of patients with sports medicine injuries in both the clinic and operating room using the knowledge and skills learned during fellowship.

An orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship should provide exposure and training in clinical evaluation and surgical treatment of injuries, foster innovative research, and support athletes with sideline coverage. In my opinion, the Steadman clinic fellowship is the top in the world.

This fellowship was the capstone on my education and has supported me in all of the above facets as I develop a subspecialty orthopaedic sports medicine practice in an academic setting.

I chose Steadman and SPRI for fellowship for many reasons but mostly because of the incredible group of people that make up the program.

I am grateful that I had the opportunity to be a part of the best and most unique fellowship program in the country. Being a Steadman/SPRI fellow has continued to pay dividends in my career as I have a world-wide network of support between my fellow Steadman and SPRI alumni and my mentors in Vail.

In his own words – Dr. Jonathon Backus, MD

I chose Steadman and SPRI because it would give me a unique opportunity to work with Dr. Clanton, one of the Nation’s best foot and ankle educators and surgeons. I also knew I wanted to have a foot practice focused on sports, and Steadman and SPRI is a great place to learn and research in an environment that has extensive experience with athletes. And it goes without saying that Vail is an awesome place to spend a year.

I’m fortunate enough to have a practice that treats many athletes and during my time at Steadman, I learned how to use the most up to date foot and ankle techniques to maximize injury recovery and return people to their sport as soon as possible.

Dr. Clanton specifically taught me how to be a better person, surgeon and clinician, and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity.
