Sports Medicine, Hip Preservation & Reconstruction

Dr. Noorzad is a dual specialty-trained orthopaedic surgeon at The Steadman Clinic.  His practice focuses on complex surgical techniques in sports medicine, hip preservation and reconstruction. He completed an Orthopaedic Surgery Sports Medicine fellowship at The Steadman Clinic and Steadman Philippon Research Institute. He completed his second orthopaedic surgery fellowship in Hip Preservation and Reconstruction under the mentorship and guidance of Dr. Joel Matta and Dr. Marc J. Philippon. Prior to this, Dr. Noorzad completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center & The Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Institute in Los Angeles, California. He attended medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University where he graduated as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr. Noorzad attended George Mason University as a member of the Psychology Honors Program, and graduated magna cum laude.

While an undergraduate student, Dr. Noorzad concurrently competed internationally as a member of the National Olympic Basketball Team of Afghanistan. He played professional basketball overseas, competing in various countries including China, Taiwan and Qatar, and competed in several regional Olympic competitions during his tenure. He’s competed in multiple professional basketball tournaments throughout the world and led his team to a Gold Medal victory in the 2010 South Asian Olympics after beating India—recording Afghanistan’s first ever Olympic Gold Medal in a team event.

His passion for sports and high level competition has made this profession a natural fit for him and his patients. “What we do in orthopaedics may not be life-saving, but it is quality of life-saving; and for many of us, the notion of quality is paramount. As much as I love my profession and the surgical skillset that I employ, surgery is my last resort. I’ve been blessed with the best mentors this field has to offer, and my treatment maxim is to get patients back to their desired function through the least invasive measures.”

With a background in psychology, Dr. Noorzad prioritizes patient over pathology. “For us, a full day of surgery is just another day in the office, but for our patients, surgery is one of the most terrifying moments of their life. It’s imperative we never forget that.” His current research interests revolve around psychosocial ramifications of injury, surgery, and recovery, and identifying correctable sources of clinical depression and anxiety within the orthopaedic patient population. Additional research interests involve assessment of 3D technology and utilization of 3D modeling for surgical planning and templating in complex pathologies of the hip. He has published several book chapters, medical illustrations, and several peer-reviewed articles that have been presented nationally.

Throughout residency and fellowship, Dr. Noorzad has worked closely with some of the top orthopaedic surgeons in the world. In discussing the importance of mentorship, he said,  “Dr. Philippon once told me that in our profession, there is no greater honor than when a patient chooses you as their doctor. Our patients can go anywhere in the world for their care, but they choose to come here. This makes it our obligation to go above and beyond for them, and it’s a core tenet that my team and I live by.”

Dr. Noorzad lives in Colorado with his wife and three children. He and his family enjoy the great outdoors, playing sports, hiking, biking, and skiing.
