Dr. Randall W. Viola has been the hand, wrist, elbow, and orthopaedic trauma specialist at The Steadman Clinic since 1999 and is the longest practicing physician at the Steadman Clinic. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University in 1988, graduating magna cum laude. While at Cornell, he competed in track and Division I alpine skiing. He completed medical school training at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine where he graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He completed his residency at the University of Washington in Seattle, spending five years at the world-renowned Harborview Trauma Center.  After residency, he completed two fellowships: a sports medicine fellowship with the legendary sports medicine innovator Dr. J. Richard Steadman at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, and a hand and microvascular surgery fellowship with hand surgery pioneer Dr. James Strickland at the Indiana Hand Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Dr. Viola is the only physician at The Steadman Clinic, and one of very few internationally, with advanced  fellowship training in both sports medicine and hand and microvascular surgery.

Dr. Viola applies advanced sports medicine techniques to hand, wrist and elbow problems and has developed numerous innovative approaches to solve complex orthopaedic issues. He is sought out by athletes worldwide for these innovative techniques and his technical excellence.  This approach provides his patients with the best possible outcomes while returning them to sports and activity as quickly as possible. Dr. Viola applies this practice philosophy not only to athletes but all of his patients as well.  While Dr. Viola’s practice has been recognized nationally and internationally for his care of high level athletes, much of his practice focuses on the treatment of common hand, wrist and elbow ailments including carpal tunnel, fractures, ligament injuries, and nerve injuries.

Dr. Viola has worked as a consultant for the U.S. Olympic Teams, Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, Premier Lacrosse League, and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard teams. He is the Head Team Physician for the men’s U.S. alpine ski team and has traveled with the team for 25 years, including to the Winter Olympics Games and Alpine World Championships.  Dr. Viola also works with numerous professional road and mountain cyclists as well as many of the world’s top Motocross and Supercross riders.

Dr. Viola is active in both clinical and basic science research and has published in the Journal of Hand Surgery, The American Journal of Sports Medicine, The Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, and the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and well as many others. He has presented his research and teaches at national and international meetings. 

Dr. Viola is a diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a member of both the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Viola lives an active lifestyle. He enjoys alpine and nordic skiing, running and cycling, as well as many other sports. He lives in Vail with his wife, Heather, and son, Liam.
