Q5: The Steadman Clinic/SPRI ATC’s work closely with local high schools. How do education and injury prevention work together for student athletes?

Education and injury prevention go hand in hand. We educate our athletes to better prepare themselves before competitions and practices as well as how to recover from them. It includes informing our athletes about appropriate off-season training, proper warm-ups, required equipment, correct cool downs, recovery protocols and good nutrition. All of this education is directed to keep our athletes as ready as possible so they can achieve their maximum performance and remain injury free.

Sean has bee with the Steadman Clinic since 2006 serving as Dr. Philippon’s Certified Athletic Trainer. He coordinates film reviews for potential patients and assists with patient evaluations and post-operative rehabilitation.

Q1: What inspired you to become a Certified Athletic Trainer?

I was always active in athletics growing up and moving into an athletic trainer role, I was able to continue to be involved with sport and athletes. It has been very rewarding to see all walks of life come to The Steadman Clinic with injuries that keep them from their passion. As an athletic trainer I am able to be part of a team that gets them back to what they love to do.

Q4: Why is post-surgical rehabilitation so important?

The main goal of post-surgical rehabilitation is to protect the surgical repair while increasing strength and, range of motion to ultimately return patients to their functional activity. It plays a crucial part in the patients’ recovery and can be attributed to as much as 50% when determining the overall success in the outcome.
